I just won a GB auction for an MPX SBR. $1200 seems like a steal to me!
Hopefully the transfer process doesn't take too long. My FFL said they can remove the stock, and make it so I don't need the ATF form/tax stamp to take the gun home. Does anyone have experience with a similar situation? How long might it take for the seller to transfer to my FFL? Would it be any longer than a normal transfer?

Congrats on your new MPX!! My NFA experience is going from pistol to SBR rifle using ATF's Form 1. But we have seen this rifle to pistol come up here before. I'm NO NFA expert, so your best answer will probably come directly from the ATF. They're actually available and usually very helpful with a phone call.

No. A firearm that was originally a rifle would be classified as a “weapon made from a rifle” if ; it has either a barrel less than 16 inches in length or an overall length of less than 26 inches. If an individual wishes to make an NFA firearm, s/he must first submit ATF Form 1, Application to Make and Register a Firearm, pay a $200.00 making tax, and receive approval of the application from ATF before converting the firearm.

However, IMO you may have the opportunity to originally classify your MPX as a pistol by making sure your FFL completes the Firearms Transfer Record, aka Form 4473's Section B, #16 checking the 'Handgun' box. If for some reason that's not possible, you should call the ATF...

Awesome. Thank you. The guy at my FFL seemed confidant that he would be able to remove the stock, and I'd be able to take it as a pistol, so I'm guessing the box you're talking about is going to be the way that works.

Are you sure about this? If it's currently registered as a SBR, then it requires a tax stamp for you to take possession. Just removing the stock and reverting to pistol form doesn't mean the paperwork isn't necessary.

No I'm not sure about any of this. That does make sense to me though. I'm just going off what I was told. Hopefully it won't be a huge pain in the rear.

I was thinking the same thing. If that MPX was originally manufactured as an SBR and the FFL on the seller's end does a Form 3 transfer to the buyer's FFL, then you're in for the whole NFA experience Removing the stock just make it an SBR without a stock.

Yeah it sounds like I will have to keep it in a locker at my LGS while I wait.
This is what I thought needed to happen, so I kind of wonder what the hell the guy I talked to yesterday was thinking.

The manufacture already has the serial number registered as an SBR so when you LGS get it it will be with a form 3 to transfer an NFA item. The only way to change it from an SBR to a Pistol would be to file a Form (forgot which one) to remove the NFA status from the serial number. If you do this you will have to complete the form 1 again to have it registered as an SBR. IMO just complete the Form 4 with the LGS and wait for it to come back. Wait times have gone back down to just a few months.

Just a little info. I purchased a MPX SBR (4.5") the end of February this year and it took about 6 weeks for the Form 3 transfer to my local FFL, including shipping. Probably 5 to 5 1/2 weeks just for the Form 3 transfer. I have that and an Omega 9K in ATF jail. Now waiting patiently.
