MPX or SP5, help me decide

9613 Views 73 Replies 39 Participants Last post by  cck
So I’m in the hunt for either the Sig MPX 8 or an HK SP5. Price and availability may be a factor in deciding but interested in your opinions, pros cons. I was once assigned an MP 5 so have a little history with H&K’s, not so much with the MPX 8. To brace or not to brace, that is the question. Pics plz Thnx

I love the SP5, if price is not a factor I'd say go for it! That said, you can't go wrong with the MPX, it's a great weapon. I SBR'ed mine.

I wanted an SP5 when they came out, but foolishly decided to wait when street prices would come down. I think the one I looked at was priced at $2,600 at the time. Haha, I'm dumb.

Nowadays I really want both an SP5 and an MPX..
I sold my old mp5 clone for a MPX and while the MP5 was great this MPX is amazing

I really enjoy both. The Sig is better for mounting optics on, has a better trigger, a little more ergonomic and it takes ar15 grips. The SP5 is extremely soft shooting, eats a wider variety of bullet styles than the Sig, and is a better suppressor host.

Both have been extremely reliable. The accuracy of the MPX wasn’t that great at all with the factory muzzle device on it, but once I removed that and put a direct thread suppressor on it, it’s extremely accurate now. The HK, shoots one hole groups with all ammo I’ve used, suppressed and un-suppressed.

So I like both for what they are and they are both a lot of fun at the range.

Personally, the MPX is the more modern equivalent. So you get a better build quality, easier optic mounting, and a consistent AR interface. Had an MP5 back in the day and after adding an MPX to the mix, sold the MP5 and don't regret it.

Like most I like both and want both, but as other have said I'd go with the MPX (I own two).
The reason? Modularity, availability of factory and aftermarket parts, and great shooting.
Throw a red dot on it and the MPX is an addictive tack driver.

I own both an MPX K and an MP5 Clone. IMHO I like the MPX K better. Both are soft shooters but I like the build quality of the MPX better. It just feels like a more solid gun to me. The MP5 is a great gun for 1960’s technology. It’s nostalgic and the MP5 slap is always cool 😉. The MPX K is just a tack driving beast. It’s the first gun I grab from the safe every time.

I have one MPX and two MP5s. None are pristine low round count digital photography models.

The MPX is a little easier to live with if you plan to bolt on optics and lights and lasers and such. They are a little harder to deal with if you plan to suppress due to the way SIG tapers the barrel, and sometimes due to the length of the stock handguard. Nothing that cannot be overcome, just a few more hoops. My biggest fear with the SIG is that they will abandon it as they have with other SIGs I have owned when it comes to support with parts and accessories. Are those Gen 1 mags or Gen2? Are they EARLY Gen 2 or later? Does yours have that extractor they used for about a month in 2019? Did you ever find that promised 4" barrel for it?

MP5 parts will be available from many sources for many years due to the number of MP5s out there in LE and military. I have fewer concern about long term availability with the HK.

I like the MPX, and once I jumped though the appropriate hoops to suppress it with a non SIG suppressor it has run fine. I have nothing against it... just don't trust that SIG has my back on ANYTHING these days.

One of my MPs is basically the same as they were in the 80s. The other, I added one good top rail, a red dot, and a small light. The rail was the only thing that was proprietary to HK. Springs, mags, etc are readily available, but a bit more expensive.

Personally if it comes to letting something go, the MPX would be the first sold.

I have an MPX K (4”) and an SP5 (SBR). If I had to choose, I’d pick the MPX any day. It’s lighter, more accurate, and more fun to shoot.

I'd rather have the MPX-K (and I do) for all the reasons mentioned above. I think MP/SP5s are ridiculously over-priced these days for what they are.

Thanks everyone for the info. I’ve put hands on a 4.5 inch MPX but want the 8’. A LGS had a 4.5 in stock w/brace but it seemed a little short to shoulder. I get the “brace concept“ without having to SBR it. The LGS said it could take some weeks to get the MPX and an even longer wait for the SP5. I should’ve bought that Colt ar in 9mm for $1,000 new six years ago but got my Sig 556r instead.

Personally I would have taken the 556R over the 9mm AR myself.... even today. I'm jealous.

I believe you made the right choice too. I love my 556R and it's a harder niche to replace for what a solid 556R in good working condition brings to the table. Mine could use a few more things but it will always do just fine with simply irons.

So can anyone explain to me why choose an MPX 9mm instead of MCX .300blk? What's the gain or benifit of this? A Rattler is not that much heavier or larger and if you want less ballistically, shoot subs. Someone will probably remark with, "buy them both", to which I'd retort, "just buy two Rattlers", lol. I just don't get it!

Unless it's to save money on ammunition for training what am I missing? Is it for less penetration compared to rifle caliber rounds? I'm lost...

Have you ever shot a 9mm MPX or similar? Once you have you would understand. Super soft shooter, staying on target is a breeze, light weight, costs about 700-1k less than a MCX. Also there is a fun factor of the MPX that can’t be beat.

I think the MPX is perfect for me at home (CQB). I like it because it shoots so smooth and fast you can just keep tack driving your target with little effort. It’s super fast back on target especially suppressed. I don’t have a Rattler but I do have a 9” Virtus 300 BLK and for CQB, I’d grab the MPX every time. Rent one and let me know what you think. It may not change your mind but I still think you will like it. It’s worth a try. Oh yeah like you said…. way cheaper to practice with. 300 blk will leave a hole in your wallet. I’ll need to sell a kidney to get more subsonic rounds😂

I hate to throw this in. What about the B&T APC9 series? I think they are a closer competitor to the Sig MPX series. Both have modularity and similar pricing.

Think somebody did a comparison review awhile back..but worry it would be the same conclusion..we like what we like and have differing opinions..and options..’Merica🤡👍
