MPX Gen 3 Double feed issues

2195 Views 22 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  griff411
I have a gen 3 MPX with two factory mags. I put 300-400 rounds thru it at the range, then today I took it out to a multigun competition.

I loaded both mags FULL and staged the PPC as my second gun. It jammed at least three times on both magazines, everytime it looked like it was trying to double feed. I had to drop the mag and dig the bullets out of the bolt area each time.

Im extremely bummed, $2k for a gun that doesn't work.

Any ideas?

When was the last time you cleaned it including the piston? If you haven’t done so, clean it and shoot it again. My main USPSA MPX gets cleaned inside and out every 100-1.5k rounds which is about every week after practice and matches.

You say factory mags.. there are to different type of factory mags used in newer Gen 3 MPX now can you please show which ones you are using?

There are also Gen 1 mags that may not be reliable in a G2 or G3 gun.

Old style, one came with it.

Thanks for the input. I only had a few hundred shots thru it. How would a dirty piston cause the bolt to drag two rounds off the magazine?

This magazine thing seems to make sense to me, why else would the gun allow two bullets to be drawn off the top of the magazine, there's no other reason other than magazine design. Or the bolt design.

I wouldn’t get to wrapped up in that idea. Many many people have used the old style (lancer) mags with great success. Yours is the first I have read about having regular double feeds. I have shot thousands of rounds through my MPX and never had double feeds.
Agreed. Sig even said that they developed the MPX around the lancer mag. My G2 mags have been flawless.

Is it possible I didn't jam the mag in hard enough? Twice?

Tough to say. I honestly would have to start from the beginning to end in trouble shooting it. Also I would take it to the range and start playing with each possible thing till I figured it out.
What kind of ammo? Full power factory ammo? Reloads?
Recently cleaned? Dirty from previous sessions?
how well lubricated is the bolt assembly? And how smooth does it it move in the upper?

I'm going to agree on this one. My MPX have never had any issue with feeding, stovepipes, or FTE's.

Can you explain this part a bit more? How were they “jammed”? One (or both) didn’t just fall out when you removed the magazine? Understanding exactly what the “double feed” looked like could help us understand what was going on.

That said, I have to lean toward a magazine issue, not a problem with the gun itself.
So, the exact problem is that the when the bolt pulled the round off the top of the magazine, two rounds came off, the intended round was inserted into battery so that the projectile was not visible, the second round was coming off the right side of the mag and was positioned, stacked the same way it came off the stack, so the rounds were side by side, one trying to chamber the the other one acting like a chamber flag. when the action was opened with the gun in the near vertical position, the rounds would not fall out, I was able to flick them out with my finger.

The ammo is Remington 115 grain new target ammo. It works flawlessly in my pistols. The gun was not freshly cleaned, it only had a few hundred rounds thru it.

This morning, at the bench, I loaded both mags full again and manually cycled 60 rounds thru the gun, same ammo, still didnt clean the rifle. I pulled to bolt out, the springs and the back end of the bolt are wet looking, not much carbon anywhere.

What is the groups view of cleaning MPX's, do you have to do it every time? if so, why?

To me, for some reason, the ammo stuck together, the side to side resistance bullet to bullet was greater than the resistance provided by the side of the magazine or any other component.

Ill take try and simulate what I saw and post it

Thank you

Todd

I did my best to recreate what I think I saw yesterday. I think it looked like this.

When you load the first round into the chamber are you pulling the charging handle and slowly letting it go forward or are you pulling and letting it fly forward under full force? Are you using the bolt release to let the bolt go forward or charging handle after your magazine is in?

I duplicated a double feed like you posted and every time it was because the bolt going in slow. What would happen is the first round would go in and the extractor wouldn’t catch the case edge so next cycle the round would stay and the second would double up.

Also is your extractor operating correct? if it’s not grabbing that round right the second will fail.

When you got the gun did you clean out all the original packing oil? It’s thicker than standard gun oil. It can get gummy and cause malfunctions.

Thank you all, but I am an idiot! It's FTE. So sorry to waste all your time.

I reproduced the failure today.. it was FTE not double feed.

Ok, so not a magazine issue then. At least we have narrowed that out.

Thanks for the effort and the reply, I really appreciate the help
I will give it a clean and evaluate the extractor, go from there.

Todd, needless to say if it's the extractor send it back to Sig!! With a low
round count, that shouldn't happen.
