Modified Front Sight

708 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  tirod
This is a super simple solution to a recent aggravating problem.
For some reason I am beginning to have difficulty quickly recognizing the front sight when shooting.
Rather than dropping the front SigLite for a sight of a different color or going down the path of searching for new sights I simply added orange paint to the existing front sight.
Instant recognition while keeping low light situations a non issue.
Again, a simple solution that has been done many times before.

How'd you do it? Look like a very neat application around the tritium.

Congratulations! Actually reminds me of the Trijicon Tritium sights of the early 1990s! They tried to simulate the Von Stavenhagen sight picture, and painted the face of the front blade white, with a white square under the rear notch.

Removed the sight, taped around the blade edges and used a paint pen to carefully outline everything. Not a lot of room but a huge difference with the old eyes ;-)

Any special type of paint? You said paint pen, but is it florescent, high glow? Or just "paint"?

This happens to be an air dry Cerakote that I applied with a paint pen. Any paint should work. The paint itself does not glow - I needed something to give me an immediate reference to the front sight and this orange did the trick.
The high luminescent paint used in Japanese dive watches is available on line. "XL3" if I remember correctly. It can be seen all night - I have a row of Citizens that use it, rarely get direct sunlight, glowing at 4am is normal. I dont bump the dresser anymore. There are about a dozen shades and in watches the blue tint is gaining popularity over green.

There are also makers of solid polymer "glow bars" etc, even tags and patches using it blended into the mix. A website called "County Comm" sells them, along with other gear that can be addictive.

I've done the white model car paint over a dead tritium on my 4566 and it works pretty well. If you run across a cheap UV light for detecting AC leaks it's a very quick way to recharge lume and less of an issue than a 250 Lm tactical light.
