Modding a P365XL Spectre Comp for a grip safety

2115 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  MykeC
Hi,

I have a P365XL Spectre Comp. I really love the gun but am apprehensive in carrying it regularly because it lacks a grip safety. I'm used to carrying guns with grip safeties.

I'm wondering if it's possible to modify this to support a grip safety? If so, which parts would I need? Just the grip + safety from the regular P365XL?

Any advice appreciated here.

The best advice I think you will get is to sell your P365XL and go buy a 1911 or Springfield XD with a grip safety.

2 options and only one of them is correct:
1. get used to carrying a gun without a grip safety, problem solved.
2. sell P365XL and buy an XD, problem not solved, but you'll feel better.

I'm going to recommend against this. If you need something to make you feel safer about carrying it, at the most install a manual safety. After about a week of practicing good trigger discipline with the safety on, you'll start to see you don't really need it as long as you're using a quality holster and you're paying attention while holstering. Personally, I practice a non complacency policy. I practice caution when holstering or handling a firearm to the point of redundancy. Both of my P365's have a manual safety, I use kydex holsters. MS on as it goes into the holster, then I flip the safety off because the trigger guard is at this point protected. The gun is drop safe. So as long as my finger or anything else doesn't make its way into the trigger guard it's not going bang.

A P365 typically has a 4.5-6lb trigger pull and the gun unloaded only weighs about 1lb. If you want to try it, make sure the gun is unloaded first, yep? Recheck it. Clear? You can pick the P365 up by the trigger. It's not going to go off. Do not try to repeat that process without making sure the gun is empty. Keep your finger off the trigger, watch your gun as it goes in the holster and make sure your shirt or nothing else is in the way of your trigger guard. You'll be okay.

The trigger stroke is also longer than what you're going to deal with on say a 1911 that has a grip safety, which might have a 2-3lb pull with a stroke short enough that it's going to go bang the moment the trigger is bumped. That'd probably go off if you tried to pick it up by the trigger.

NOT THAT ANYONE EVER SHOULD pick up a gun by the trigger. My point is the trigger pull is heavier than the gun generally when it comes to strikers provided you maintain the stock pull weight.

If you must have a grip safety, I'd personally look for a different gun.

Are you actually talking about a 1911 style grip safety? Which is in the backstrap of the grip and disengaged just by taking a grip on the gun? . Or just an external manual safety, which is typically a lever you operate with your thumb? The latter option is easy and if you'd feel more comfortable with it I certainly wouldn't talk you out of that.

If you just want to add a manual safety all you need is a grip module and the safety lever, which should come with a spring and a tiny piece that acts as the detent. It's pretty easy to install just be careful with the detent and spring.. you don't want to send the tiny thing flying, you'd never find it.

This sounds silly, but whenever I'm working with tiny springs like that, I always do the install in the shower, no joke. It literally can't go anywhere (other than the drain, which I obviously seal off) and it is very easy to find on white tile if it does get dropped.

If you are literally talking about 'grip' safety, there is no option like that for P365. If you meant to say 'manual' safety, then you are in luck because it's a simple addition. I used to carry 1911's and once a safety became available for the P365, I added it to both of mine. You will need the kit below and find the style of P365XL grip module you like with 'manual' safety cuts / notches to accommodate the addition. Welcome to the forum.

If you don't pully on the little gold flat thingy... no go bangy. Keep fingy off flat gold thingy no go bangy... A good solid kidex pressure holster... Which you check every time you insert the pistol into it ...no go bangy.
But really thousands of people carry 365 and numerous other pistols without manual or pressure safeties... Just get used to handling it the proper way and you should never have an issue.

And if you do all that and have a safety lever installed too it really no go bangy!

Touchdowns are preferable to conceding when you're inches to goal.

For me it's not a matter of "feeling safer". It's a matter of being fully responsible.

I've already responded to 🤞🤞🤞 what he said.

Having said that, this thread is not for debating the merits of having or not having a Spectre Comp with or without a safety.
It's about how best to go about adding one.
