MCX Virtus 300 BO vs DDM4 PDW 300 BO

A Sig MCX Virtus 300BO at LEO pricing caught my eye a few days ago. It was $2287+ tax. I researched it, thought about it and sat on it for a couple of days. I finally decided I would buy it but when I went to buy it it was gone! As they say think long, think wrong.

The whole experience did pique my interest in the platform so I started looking around for another one. I did find a few at regular pricing but most of them were in the $2600-2700 price range if they were in stock. Then I found one at Proven Outfitters for $2300 at LEO pricing but they included one not so little detail the original place omitted. The LEO version does not come with a brace! You have to buy it separately which is an additional $150-225 depending on the model and, incidentally, the one I would want is backordered.

I started looking at the IWI Galil ACE pistol in 7.62x39. I have the rifle version and it's a fine weapon but the soviet caliber isn't nearly as good as 300BO in a short barrel. Pass.

Then I discovered the Daniel Defense DDM4 PDW 300BO. I did some homework and decided it might fit my particular needs even better than the Sig. The intended use is home defense and I'll be running it suppressed with subsonic ammo. I'll never shoot it past 100 yards. I live by myself out in the sticks so over penetration is a nonissue.

Based on that I prefer the DD over the Sig for the following reasons. One, it's about $500 cheaper by the time you add a brace of some sort. Two, I prefer a DI system over a proprietary gas piston system. I have both types in other rifles (including Sig). Any advantages gas piston has over DI is outweighed by lack of modularity and in my experience they both work fine. I think the whole gas piston thing is way over hyped. Three, there's nothing about the DD I need to swap out or add. I like it exactly as it is. Four, I have folding stock rifles and I never use them folded except for fun on the range. The difference in OAL between the fully retracted DD and the folded Sig is insignificant so storage/transportability is the same.

So, there it is. I bought the DDM4 PDW instead of the Sig MCX Virtus and I'm very comfortable with my choice. Both are superb platforms and either one would fit my needs but for me I prefer the DD. I'm actually glad the first MCX I considered buying became unavailable.

Since this will be exclusively a bump in the night weapon I may for the very first time actually mount a flashlight on a firearm. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I'll be putting a SilencerCo SpecWar 7.62 suppressor on it. I'll get a range report after I pick it up and shoot a few rounds.

FTR, I never considered the Rattler. The 5" barrel and 1:5 twist is too specific IMO. Yes, it's perfectly set up for my intended use but the 7" barrel and 1:7 twist on the DD seems like a better choice to me. YMMV.

Congrats on your DDM4 PDW! It is really a nice shooting gun and suppresses very well. I'd put the $500 you saved going with the PDW into some .300 Blk subsonics and have some fun!

I agree with @abnrgr275
Use that money to get some subs, and get your rifle zero'd in for those rounds. In my opinion, the 300blkout is an underappreciated round and platform.

I love my 11.5 300 blackout! Its one of the more "fun" guns to shoot. Subs make it very cool to experiment with

Update: I picked it up today. I also bought a few hundred rounds of supersonic and subsonic ammo. Busy day with other obligations but I did mount the suppressor and fire a few rounds of each just to function check. I only shot one magazine (no sights/optics) of mixed ammo. No issues and the subsonic was awesome! I'll get back to you with some range data after I choose and mount an optic of some sort. Open for suggestions. It'll be sighted in at 50 yards so no need for any heavy magnification. Probably 4X at the most. Here's the obligatory pic:

I hope you enjoy your DD as much as I have mine. I got mine early and got LE pricing, so it was not a horrible price, and I have really had a ball with it in every way other than keeping some subsonic 300 around.
It only had a couple hundred rounds on it here. Since all I have really done is put on an ASR hider and a can and run about 1k rounds through it.

I've decided on an optic. I'm going with an EOTech 512. No BUIS. I don't need magnification and I'm a proponent of the K.I.S.S. principle. This will be an under 100 yard gun. Pics and a range report when I get it all together.

I’ve been contemplating both of these. I’d really like to handle both before dropping 2k plus but not having any luck with local shops.

Both are high quality. Sig is a piston gun the DD is a DI gun. If either of them even slightly appeals to you more than the other go with it. No bad choices with these two.
