MCX Rattler and Nomad 30 - Where can I find a list of good subsonic ammo for SBRs?

1367 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  cajun 22
Good afternoon!

I'm trying to find a list of subsonic ammo that has been tested with the Rattler. From the research I've done so far it looks like some ammo is not appropriate for the short 5.5" 1:5 twist barrel.

What has worked for you? I'm trying to avoid spending a ton of money on ammo I can't use. Also trying to avoid damaging a gun I can't replace.

I would like to use the gun for home defense and range fun. For home defense I want quiet and good expansion. Distance is not a priority.

So far I've found
Discreet Ballistics: 300 AAC Blackout 188gr Subsonic

Maxim Defense: 300 AAC Blackout 190gr Subsonic

Thank you!

I'll look into those. Thank you!
Subsonics are whats going to be finicky.

Hornady Black 300blk subsonics won't cycle.
Sig 300blk subsonic tipped hunting rounds won't cycle.

That is a crying shame you have to be so picky with the ammo. For me that says the gun has a very narrow window for proper functioning. Before you stake your life on it make sure it will run in extreme weather conditions as well. If functioning is a gas issue then I would think you would want the heavier 220gr. stuff. My 300BO AR eats any and everything off the shelf I feed it that has an in-spec case.

I got a box of both. I read an article about the Hornady 208s cycling on the "+" gas setting. Expansion may be an issue though. I'll see when I get to the range in a few weeks.

The fact that I have to be picky with ammo double sucks because of how expensive it is. I knew about the prices going into this but the necessity of trial and error stinks.

SOCOM decided to keep using the gun so it can't be too bad.

Once I think I've settled on a brand/bullet I will definitely put a few hundred rounds down range to make sure the combo is consistent.

Just the way it is, especially with subsonic rounds....its not a bad thing, you just have to choose your ammo carefully. The Sig 300blk subsonic tipped hunting rounds even say in the description that is recommended for 9" or more barrel.

New Rattler owner, new member, and first post. I have read that plated bullets do not work well with the 1-5 twist. Berries comes to mind. All factory ammo should be ok.
