M11-A1 keep or….

2405 Views 20 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  downeyg

I’ve had this smooth m11 for a couple years now. I traded a SW HI power 40.

I like the gun, love the DA/SA gray guns trigger.

But I just don’t carry it and flip flop on sell/trade for something more useful.

Thoughts?

More useful? Than a M11-A1? That's a pretty short list because that's one heck of a quality firearm.

Trade for whatever that suits you.

Sell. I think the going FMV is around $450-500. 😎

Hx: I went through a collecting phase, then on to a “one platform” phase. I traded, an inherited SW Hi power 40 for it. Basically to see what the sig was all about. Then I built a p320.

Just trying to find a purpose for it.

Speaking from personal experience, if you trade or sell it, you'll risk traveling down the path of seller's remorse in the future...but there's only one way to find out.

Just to make it clear, I think the P229/M11A1 is a great defensive platform. I duty carried a P229 in .40 cal. for 20 years, and ran it through the wringer as an agency firearms instructor. Guess that makes me prejudiced. I had to give up my agency issued P229 when I retired, so when I found a M11-A1 available from another area retired LE, I jumped on the deal. While not the most ideal concealed carry for my body shape and size, it serves as a trustworthy Home Defense handgun, and doubles for Open Carry. It's simply a time proven, quality firearm.

Just curious…..Why did you carry the P229 as a duty weapon? I carry the P229 concealed but I carried the P226 as a duty weapon. I have never understood why some chose the P229 which is a compact, as an open carry duty weapon. Was it an agency decision? Fortunately, we were able to choose our weapons from a fairy extensive list.

You sure do see a lot o P229’s carried by detectives on re-runs of Law & Order, etc. M11-A1 is my winter carry.

Exactly. Perfect concealed carry detective service weapon. For uniformed open carry, P226. Jmho 😉

Not Sigs, but we had two female officers who were experiencing issues with the Glock 17 being too large for their hands and were allowed to carry a G19. Of course someone filed a grievance with the union and the end result was the G19 also being authorized for patrol carry.

That aside, by today’s standards the P229 is probably considered a full size gun.
AzMaz: to answer your quesion, my LE position required backcountry foot patrols carrying a pack, as well as plain clothes cc details in frontcountry settings. The P229 was the best compromise, and was stowed in a gun pack at my waist while I was on backcountry patrol. A duty belt was too cumbersome for SAR and EMS in the backcountry. Others in my agency, primarily those on road patol, carried the P226 for frontcountry duty, but us backcountry detail folks were happy with a P228, P229, or P220. I never felt undergunned.

Wasn't the 228 the first M11 and then it became the 229 that replaced the 228 and became the M11???

I do believe the M11-A1 is the P229, the M11 is the P228. I could be mistaken.
Keep it and pick up a 365 in some configuration.

I had a P229 back in the 90's and got rid of it, now I'm in the process of trying to acquire another P229. I'm always one to recommend keeping something if your unsure. I've traded several pistols over the years that I wish I still had.
