Loose Internal Extractor on P228

915 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  TigerBW
I think I just identified why I've been getting very intermittent FTE's (extract) with my P228. Touching the extractor claw, it's loose / wiggles. I sent it to Sig for the SSP close to two years ago and it started after that. Sig did replace the internal extractor as part of the SSP make-over. I'm very comfortable with external extractor Sig slides but I've never opened up or worked on the internals of the Sig breech block, internal extractor. I'll be giving Sig a call but in the mean time any thoughts on how to fix?

The key here, is how tightly the Extractor fits within the Breach cavity that holds it in position. In this case you always "modify" the cheapest part, which would be the Extractor. Use of shim stock comes to mind as a possible solution, since trying to add material to the Extractor by welding would have an effect on its "spring" temper.
Remember these original Extractors, being heat treated and tensioned spring steel, had to be anchored at the base for their tensioned arm to give the claw holding power. That's why the Extractors shouldn't be removed unless necessary for replacement. Anchor the base solidly, such as possibly shimming, and the arm can provide the tension needed.

Thanks Willard. Here are some pictures that show the movement of the extractor. You can see the difference / gap where the end opposite the claw is visible near the FPB plunger (left).

^^^ Once in place, it definitely should not easily be moved like that.

Since Sig replaced the Extractor with the "SSP makeover", I would solicit them for the remedy. Depending on their response, should determine your next move, but I would offer them your photos to see the situation.

I'll only offer my solution, if they balk at repairing it.

Update: P228 went back to Sig and they replaced the extractor. I paid $25 for shipping but no charge other than that. Once they received it the work was done in 4 days and I had it back in 6. Very happy overall.

Fantastic news. So SIG does indeed have a secret supply of old extractors. Good to know.

They still service the old folded slide guns. So, they got to have them still.
Wasn’t there also a quality aftermarket option for those internal extractors (maybe two years ago or something)? They were either from Matrix or another reputable source such as Matrix. (Not saying that SIG would use that, just wondering)

Oh that's right, it was GerryR. Does he still make them?
