Live round jammed in chamber

8289 Views 54 Replies 38 Participants Last post by  cmdrcody
Today I shot my new P320Xc and after 21 rounds I had a failure to load. The gun didn't go fully into battery and the slide will not move forwards or backwards. Can anyone give me suggestions on how to resolve this without killing myself?

After shot 21 in a new P320XC, the slide didn't go into battery and the live round jammed partially in the chamber. The pictures show the situation. You can see the casing rim in the pictures. The slide will neither go forwards or backwards.

Can anyone show me how to resolve this?

If you attempt to remove chambered round, grasp slide with nondominant hand, slam shooting hand into grip frame of gun. Make sure gun is pointed in the safest direction. I have cleared a number of rounds in this manner.

I am not a gunsmith but I have had this happen to me and resolved it with the advice of one . If this happened at the end of a string of fire the warm/hot chamber may have already caused this case to swell a little so allow it to cool sufficiently or even stick it in a cooler with a cold pack. If that doesn't work try spraying a little lube in there . Both options have worked for me. Again I'm not a gunsmith but I feel they are relatively safe options. If you are uncomfortable overall with the situation then please just take it to a qualified gunsmith.

Thanks, but the gun is very cool and still no luck.

Can’t just rack the slide back and eject it?

Souinds like a improperly sized or more liklely improperly crimped round. Best bet is to do the procedure on a range with the muzzle pointing downrang. Uasing a solid surface catching the edge of the front of the slide and giving the handgun a shape rap forcing the slide backwards. Finger OFF the trigger.

I would not suggest doing this at home.

Likewise. In every case the slide eventually released.

If you choose to go this route remember to have your eyepro/earpro on and have the gun pointed in a safe direction.
Be very conscious of trigger finger. It is easy to loose track of it when applying more than the normal amount of force to the gun.

Welcome by the way. If you haven't already done so, eject the magazine out of it. Sounds like this happened on the last round of a 21 round magazine.

Point weapon in a safe direction.
Use a small plastic pry bar to help force the stuck round back out of the breech. You could also use metal pry bar if you brace it against a thin wooden stick (like a paint stir stick) so you don't have metal on metal that could mar the slide.

if you are unsure please take to a gunsmith.

Yea, please take it to a gunsmith and make sure it's always pointed in a safe direction until it gets there. Don't trust advice on the internet for something like this.

has anyone ever drilled a hole in the casing and dumped the powder?

As a side note. If you take it to a shop/gunsmith. Leave the gun in your car and talk to the gunsmith/shop employees before you bring the gun inside. Literally go in the shop, tell them the situation and proceed from there. When if you bring the gun in. Bring it in a hard case.

I've just seen way, way too many people bring loaded guns and just whip them out without warning where I work. Too many (1 is too many, but it's been more) loaded guns pointed at me and others.

Wondering if there was a squib, shot (expanded barrel), then a failed feed.

Here’s how:

Be sure to drop the magazine, then:

Always keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, use a small screwdriver or plastic pry bar to lift the spring loaded extractor off the rim of the stuck round.

With the extractor lifted you’ll be able to pull the slide back to slide lock and remove the round.
I have a P320 X Compact with a tighter barrel than some and this befuddled me a couple times.

What‘s happening is that the round is slightly bulged at the base, which means it sticks in a tight barrel…then the extractor, which is over the rim, won’t let the slide be pulled back…

This happened in my case with reloaded rounds on which I’d been casual about their fit in what turns out to be a tight but still within spec barrel.

Commo
