Legacy MCX or Virtus?

642 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  basedrnc
I have an MCX which I'm not sure is a Virtus or legacy MCX. How can I identify either one?

I obviously have the serial, is there a timeframe/year or some other characteristic I can use to identify the gun?

Welcome!

The legacy MCX used key mod for the handguard. The Virtus uses M-lok for the hanguard and the steel cam plate on the left side of the upper says "Virtus" while the legacy steel cam plate is blank. Legacy MCXs are black while Virtus generation can be gray, FDE or black. The legacy MCX came with iron sights from SIG. The Virtus has a pinned set of springs above the bolt carrier while the legacy spring keeper was NOT pinned. Be very careful reassembling the legacy spring keeper to prevent damage. There was a recall on the legacy model that replaced the bolt carrier with one that has a safety lock above the firing pin.

The serial numbers on the legacy and early Virtus both started with 63C. Give us the serial with the last three or four digits replaced with "X" we might be able to give an appoximated date of manufacture. SIG customer service can give you an exact date of manufacture, the model and whether there has been a recall and if the was completed

Thanks for this. I called sig and provided my serial, they informed me that my manufacture date is June 2021 and the model is indeed a Virtus.
