I took the plunge – owner of a new SIG M400 Tread

I had been looking to add a full-size AR-style rifle to my safe. I’ve used, owned, and built AR rifles, carbines, and pistols for years, but the only one I currently owned, but rarely shot, was a customized Del-Ton 7.5-inch pistol. I found the blast and noise, even with a suppressor, to be excessive, and the short barrel was so over-gassed that clean up, even after a short range session was a chore.

I had been reading the forum to see what SIG Sauer had to offer, and I stopped by a few local gun stores to see if anything was available in the used racks (there were no SIGs) and to gauge the market price. Much to my surprise, one of my local haunts, which is a stocking SIG dealer, had three M400 Treads in stock for the price of $849.99. They also had a Tread Coil, as well as some of the more expensive piston models. I looked at both the Tread and the Coil and decided that the $500 difference in price (the Coil was $1,349.99) really didn’t justify what you received. I like the looks of the slim handguard on the Tread, and don’t care for the vertical foregrip. I also have a Mepro RDS that is much better than the Romeo5 (in my opinion), and the trigger can always be upgraded later if I don’t like it.

Apparently, the dealer received some type of incentive from SIG as even on their website and in their computer system, the Tread was listed at $1,049.99. Total cost out-the-door including tax was $909.49.

All I was able to do today was get it out of the box (with a date on 10-May-2022 on the label), do a quick clean (not much was necessary), lube, and mount the RDS and BUIS (I read a number of posts regarding issues with mounting a MLOC rail on the front of the handguard and the height disparity between the MLOC rail and the rail at the rear of the upper receiver. I didn’t take a micrometer to both rails, but they look close enough to at least try co-witnessing with the RDS; I’m using a FAB Defense BUIS set. The rail I mounted at the muzzle is 5 slot generic aluminum rail that I had in my parts box, and it went on without problem). The RDS needed a slight tension adjustment of the toggle locks, but nothing else. Lastly, I swapped out the Magpul stock with a MFT minimalist stock that I also had in the parts box.

Tomorrow, I plan on getting out to my range and sight in the RDS, and hopefully the BUIS, as well as make sure that everything works as designed.

Also, I didn’t get an Accu-wedge nor any of the yellow patches, just the carbine, one 30 round Pmag, the obligatory lock, manual, advertising, and sticker.

P.S. - Photos later, too dark tonight.

Congrats @Oldrider ! I hope you enjoy your new rifle. Sounds like you got a great deal. Love your F-4 Avatar. I was an F-15 guy myself. Thanks for your service.

That’s a great price on a TREAD…you did really well!!

As @TacoJoe said, the front BUIS is a bit of an issue. I went the “easy” way and replaced the entire handguard with a Samson Manufacturing that has a full length Picatinny rail on top. That was I knew the front and rear sights are on the same plane. You may have to make some adjustments to get them sorted out.

Other than that, it’s a great weapon…enjoy!!

Got out to my range today. Everything went well; it's fun to have an accurate, reliable firearm that doesn't assail the senses when you shoot it. I prefer to use 20 round PMags; burned up the first one and a couple of rounds from the second to get the RDS sighted-in at 25 yards (upper target), then adjusted the BUIS to the dot; no problems whatsoever. On the lower target, I finished out the second magazine with both RDS and iron sights. Finished up the session with a third magazine hitting the 12-inch steel plate from 100 yards (at, and maybe even beyond, the limit of my eyesight without magnification). Every shot was rewarded with the ring of copper clad lead on steel.

Congrats!

SIG used to have quite a selection of long guns but dropped them. I guess they needed the production capacity for the new mil contracts and started prepping for it early.

Very interested in this post. Shopping for my first Ar and would really like to stick with Sig. (can't help it)
The M400 is at the top of my list. Anxious to see how the OP likes it after a few range trips.

Congrats! I picked up a Tread PM400 (the 11.5” pistol version) a few months ago with the intent of SBRing it, and I’m rather impressed with it. I really like the ambidextrous controls, I have a couple MCXes and there is a definite family vibe. All I’ve done to mine is add the Tread front sight rail, Tread rail covers and handstop, MBUS Pros and a Romeo4T on a Reptilia lower 1/3 mount. When the tax stamp is back I’ll add a Magpul MOE SL-K stock.

Picked up an M400 last week from a local Mom & Pop at $849. It’s a solid rifle - much better fitted than my Ruger AR556. I’ve got an interim optic mounted and hope to get to the range next week. Other than a WML & a QD on the fore end I can’t see doing much to this one other than a good optic. I’m leaning toward a Holosun 512 since I have the 510 on my Ruger … I’d like to keep the reticles common.

I had it out this morning as a matter of fact. I decided to change the stock back to the original Magpul, and I also changed the Meprolight RDS to a SIG Romeo-MSR (it's lighter weight, has a smaller footprint on the rail, has see-through lens caps, and it's a SIG sight). Only took 6 rounds to get back on zero. Solid, dependable, and accurate carbine.

I have a TREAD Rifle and the Pistol love them. Very accurate and quality seems there.
I have upgraded the hand guards on both to the SIG lighter ones.
Rifler has a DD stock and grip, R3/J3 combo. Pistol SB4 brace, DD grip and a Holosun RDS.

Finally took the Snakebite SE to the range today. She was baptized with 5.56 and 223 ammo. Sweet! Some of my range associates came by and really admired the rifle. I have a Vortex Spitfire 3x prism optic mounted as well as a bipod.. Need to adjust the windage a little, but the gun fired well and no problem with either 5.56 or 223 ammo.

Just picked up a Snakebite version. It has the upgraded handrail and is coyote brown, for $980. Of course I later found it for $899 ...ugh. The handrail you have is supposed to get to hot to handle if firing rapidly. The price you found is nothing special, but a pleasant surprise from what one would expect to pay for a Sig rifle. From my research, these used to be much more expensive, like $1,400 - $1,500, originated in 2010, but they were not selling. So SIG rebranded them as the Tread in 2018-2019, and dropped the price significantly, and I believe now they are selling well. Supposedly they did nothing to lower the quality, just dropped the price.

I purchased a Tread yesterday. I am waiting on NICS here in the People's Republic of NJ. My son has one and his is a good shooter.
