Help - Alternative to P226 with Similar Grip

540 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  md1600
Hello, need some suggestions please. What other handguns have a similar feel and grip shape as the P226? Looking for lighter alternatives to CCW (tried a P229 but the grip shape didn’t feel like the P226).

What else should I look at? Thanks!

It all depends on which "grip" your P226 has, for one thing.

The balance of a P229 is different than a P226, so whether that's what has thrown you off, I can't say. The P229 has basically the same angle as the P226 in relation to the bore, as well as circumference, just roughly 3/8" shorter.

The P227 will be the same basic length, and angle, but larger circumference, due to surrounding a .45 Auto double stack Magazine.

I don't know of any handguns who "duplicate" Sig grips, other than the various foreign "clones", but most of them are copies of either the P220, or P229. Several older Astra pistols, as well as the Arex Zero One, and possibly the Zastava CZ 99 which does come close to P226 size.

Try a P229 legion. The grips really are better/different than an Elite or stock 229. Changes the
grip feel dramatically (well to me anyway)

I would say try the CZ 75 if you want something other than the Arex mentioned above.

That really is dependent upon what grips you have on the 226. You could try USP/USP compact 40s or 9s (similar grip angle, little different grips shape) or a FNX 40/9 (similar grip angle). These are lighter than a 226.

For something lighter you could looked at a p2000 with different backstraps.

Another thing to consider would be to start by finding a pistol that is the size and weight your looking for and then experimenting with bicycle intertubes or wrap around hogue grips. Depending on what grips you have on the 226 you may be able to get something close with the different backstraps of a p2000. They weigh around 25 oz and are outstanding pistols.

If you can tell more of what grips you are currently using I could offer up a better opinion.
If you have smaller hands like me, I feel the p229 is slightly thicker. You never mentioned is DA/SA is a requirement. If not, try a P320 with the Small grips. Also, look at the HK P30 or VP9. They have multiple grip panel combinations.
One of, if not the first, pistol with an interchangeable backstrap is the Walther P99. It has a curved backstrap, like the P2XX series, with different size inserts (small, medium, large) however, it is a polymer frame (lighter weight than a metal frame) and has a unique DA/SA system. It has a double stack magazine and was replicated as the S&W 99 in .40 S&W, .357 SIG, and .45 ACP (slightly larger frame). Walther basically used the same frame with the PPQ. Lots of P99s, PPQs, and S&W 99s out there, as well as plenty of magazines, holsters, and accessories. Also, consider the P320 with a Wilson Combat grip module, which is noticeably (at least to me) thinner than the standard SIG P320 grip modules.
I would say try the CZ 75 if you want something other than the Arex mentioned above.
I dunno, I find the stock CZ grips to be thinner (at least on the Shadow). I changed mine
out to the palm swell grips which admittedly are now almost too fat.

Makes sense. Sigs have a chunky feel to the grip in most of their models, which is why I prefer them. Someone above said the HK P30/VP9, a great suggestion. With the grip panels added that's a very customizable option out of the box to get the feel desired.
