Exploring my P322 Last round FTFeed

I initially experienced this with Velocitors, the slide would move too fast for the last round to feed and it would often stovepipe or even eject from the gun and once the gun was more broken-in I started seeing failures mid mag.

After about 2500 rounds through 4 magazines I began experiencing last round failures with normal high velocity rounds such as MiniMags, Aguila Super Extra, Federal 36gr CPHP. I thoroughly cleaned the gun and mags and went to the range again today to explore these issues.

I started by testing all the old mags with 3 kinds of normal Hi Velocity, just loading two rounds at a time and all four magazines had failures; some more than others. I took out a new magazine to test and had no failures with it. Then I took the spring out of the new mag and put it in the old mag body that had the most frequent failures and the failures went away. Next I took the worn spring and put it in the new mag body and surprisingly had no failures. So it appears my failures are caused by a combination of worn mag + worn spring, but remove one of these conditions and the failures resolve. This does make me question the long term durability of the plastic mags and who knows if replacement springs will ever be available.

To retain reliability with the worn mags I need to step down to lower powered ammo, at least for the second to last round. I could shoot a mag full of high velocity reliably as long as the second to last round is rated 1200 fps or lower which would properly feed the last one.

No doubt the gun’s design is also contributing to this, even with a new mag I get failures with 40 grain hot stuff like Velocitors and Aguila Interceptors, whereas other .22’s run fine with them. So there’s something about the gun’s design that makes it sensitive to hot ammo and magazine wear, and being plastic the magazines wear more quickly. By contrast, my SR22 with around 10K rounds through 4 original magazines still isn’t ammo sensitive; actually less so than when new.

I’m not trashing the P322 it’s a fun gun, but thought I’d share my findings and workarounds in case someone else has these issues.

Have you cleaned your magazines, followers and springs? I haven't had any issues except a couple Velocitors stovepiped on the last round (usually I shoot MiniMags). I haven't shot half as much as you have so I'm paying attention to what others experiences are when I get there.

.22lr rounds are noted to be dirtier than center fire so perhaps the mags need cleaning?

Yes, and good suggestion. I did disassemble and clean the mags before yesterday’s testing.
When I clean my center fire mags a couple times a year I pull a silicone cloth through and wipe the followers and springs before reassembly.

I'm betting the p322 mags would benefit as well.

Rimfire firearms are notorious for having flimsy magazine springs that weaken with use. I've had to throw away several 10/22 and Mark 1 mags because the springs went bad. So far the only centerfire mags I ever had to junk due to bad springs were 8-round 1911 mags. Of course these mags were all several years old. I wouldn't expect a mag for a gun that's only been out for a few months to go bad.

I did what you suggested and it seemed to help initially. The HV only failed in two of the four mags at the start. After the initial experiment I tried to enjoy the gun with some range shooting with Federal Automatch (1200 fps). By the time I shot a couple hundred rounds 3 of the four mags failed with the Automatch, so they seem to be regressing. At this point I had to drop down to TAC 22 (1100 fps) to keep the malfunctions at bay.

Hopefully someone like Tandemkross will come up with something like their “Green Springs” for the P322. We need to band together and blitz their customer service with this request so they think it’s worth their while😆
I talked to Sig and they want me send the gun in to look it over. Said neither the recoil spring or magazines should be giving any trouble at a 3k-ish round count.
I received the gun back with a new recoil spring but the high velocity last round malfunctions persist with the old magazines, so the magazines appear to be the weak link with this gun.

Sig also sent an extra power recoil spring to try that they developed for the issues with Velocitors. I’ll also try it with high velocity and my old magazines to see if it will function.

Regular spring next to extra power spring:
