Do I Need a 716I ??

1754 Views 27 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  NDG12
I have a few rifles in my collection, A .300 WM bolt & .308 bolt in an mdt chassis....& also a semi auto, Ruger SR 556 piston driven for the .223 & 556 cartridges....i also have the .300 Blk barrel for it.....(not to mention a .22 WMR semi auto)
My state is banning 10+ rd magazines which is pushing me to "think" the only hole in my list is a .308 AR in a **** situation.....never was interested in one before the ban, however the governor has change that, i still have a few weeks to get the magazines & the rifle later on....but my question is
"do i really need a .308AR....??" or can i get by on what i have....
I think a great choice is the 716I, (i prefer a piston)....but the 716 gen 2 is out of price range.
Wife thinks i am wasting $$ considering the other ones i already have. Should i just drop it or go for it??
Any thoughts , suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Everyone needs a 716I! Why, well aside from it being the best 7.62x51 rifle you can get for the money, it is a very accurate, reliable and smooth functioning rifle that is highly adaptable to shoot in many different roles. From a Defensive perspective it became the most distributed AR-308/AR-10 type rifle in the World when India ordered 72,000+ units in n 2019. It's reliability and performance were put to the test and in 2020 India's Ministry of Defense contracted SIG for 72,000 more units. At the same time the SIG 716I hit the US Market and since it's creation in 2019 there hasn't been any defects, recalls or issues. I authored the threads here and at AR-15.com found below, and in all the pages there are no manufacturing issues or problems noted across the board.

The 716I can be your Defensive rifle, your hunting rifle, your plinking rifle or a Special Purpose type reach out and touch somebody rifle. It is truly multifaceted and can perform almost any role. It can be suppressed as-is and most users are able to shoot it around or under MOA. If your MIL or LE here is a great deal at Proven Arms & Outfitters.

Sounds like your in WA state with me. I live by JBLM in Olympia and just happen to have a 716I if you'd like to shoot it.

Good luck in any regard with whatever you choose.

Is there something you need to do with .762 semi-auto that you can’t do wih what you have?

I get it - I want one too, but I can’t write a realistic purpose statement for one.
Yes.

Purpose: "To be prepared for engagement at distance where a bolt gun would be too slow to win the fight."
hard to imagine what that would be, but no one in Ukraine thought they would ever need one a few weeks ago either.

You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

That’s about the same as what I wrote. I can’t get beyond the “at a distance” part given my current life circumstances.

IMO I - not saying you - would be better served buying another x1000 .223 for my existing Carbine at this time. An AR10 + 5,000 .308 is a difficult capital expense decision just to be prepared for a (I hope) unlikely long range engagement.

I think you really just want the 716 but is under stress with the political climate, and the lack of support from your wife. I've stop giving tactical reasons to my later firearm purchases since the self defense part, even practical potential combat range is covered (city/urban). Purchase it because you can, specially if you're financially not burdened by it.

You have a bolt 308 which is likely more accurate. If you follow this then no you don’t need a 308 for that purpose. But if you want one get one-want is different than need-and usually requires a lot less justification.

i appreciate your support.....but sometimes.....sometimes she keeps me balanced & offers a different perspective, lol.

The 716i is a great AR 10 platform -- but it's definitely more of a "nice to have" than a "must have". It's definitely accurate, but I wouldn't want to lug it around the woods when I was hunting. It can certainly "reach out and touch" at extended distances, but so can an AR 15 platform.

Truth in advertising: I have a 716i and multiple 5.56 AR's, along with a Ruger GSR Scout rifle in /308. If I had to keep one .308 platform, it would be the Ruger.

(And there are times I probably could use my wife to offer an "different perspective" on my gun purchases -- it would leave more room in my safe!)

I'll help rationalize: It won't be a new caliber to stock for ammo, so why not add the 716i.

We have a 716i, a DD V5, and POF 7.62 (DI & Piston) guns in stock. I like the DI guns better due to weight, regardless of caliber. I would go with one of POF's Revolution 7.62x51mm with their "Dictator" adjustable gas blocs to run it suppressed. I have DD V5 on layaway. I am thinking I should swap out...

I may have said this before-keep it light and don't make it something it's not. Mine wears a 1-6, no bipod, the only change I did was a SOPMOD stock. Remember-it's a carbine, just happens to be in .308 caliber.
I think it's the best platform for a large frame AR, you get a lot for your money
I have decided I “need” a 308 autoloader. The only question is 716i or a PSA gen3. No reason not to have one.
for me, it came down to not wanting to be outgunned by the zombies if i can help it.
