I'm looking into a Garrett holster for my P229 SAS. But their holster list doesn't include a 229 non-rail. It does however include the P228 and the M11-A1.
So is the P229 SAS the exact same size and shape as either of those, or both?
Because Garrett holsters are leather lined kydex it's pretty important to get something that will fit.

Thanks

A non-rail P229 will usually fit in a rail holster. However, the newer and older slide profiles can create problems on tight fitting holsters.

The SAS slide is basically the same size, but not exactly the same. The P228 is much more "square".

EDIT: Since the SAS has more rounded edges, I would generally think it would fit in a holster for the other guns.

Thanks bblr. I may call them before I order just to be sure. Apparently they're pretty good at customer service.
I would contact them, as SAS were made with both Legacy Slides, and the later long Extractor Legion style Slides. Being Kydex, regardless of the leather lining, the profile needs to be correct...

I've got more money sitting in holster bags than I'll ever recoup. I've dabbled in holster building before but I usually buy pre-made shells and go from there. This time I started with a flat sheet of kydex, and another of leather. And a piece of goatskin that I've used to line several shells in the past. It holds up very well using Aleene's Leather & Suede Glue to stick it to the shell.
This is the first time I've ever tried to form a piece of kydex for a pistol. Previously the only forming I had done was for a Benchmade folder.
I built a kydex press sometime back and had everything on hand that I needed to do this, the only thing I've lacked is the gumption and the experience. Oh, and the skill. But I gave it a try today and this is what I came up with.
I used my wife's oven since the Goodwill toaster oven I had bought for working kydex wasn't big enough for the sheet I started with today. I still need to apply some heat in a couple of places, and I'd like to insert a tensioning adjustment. And put some coloring to the raw edge. I burnished the edges using my drill motor and a wood thread spool with a piece of all-thread thru it. I made a couple of those in different sizes and they work pretty well. Still can't make a professional edge because I've never found a quality hand skyver (ie not made in China). After those touchups andonce the straps stretch out a bit it'll be about done. My personal preference is for holsters to clip or snap to my belt, and the flatter the back the better.
I don't know for sure that I won't buy an STX from Garrett eventually, but for now this will be something I can play with.

Nice job! Very clean looking holster.

I made a holster, almost 50 years ago, for my Ruger Security Six. Of course it was all leather, and of a pancake style, while it worked as planned, it would never have been marketable!

My experience with kydex has been limited to some AIWB/IWB models. While I've modified some, I've never had the inclination to try and make one.

Thanks Willard. Lined kydex makes for a pretty nice holster. I especially like GI's Neptune pattern with a black liner. I may get one yet, but I also enjoy working with my hands and trying to build things. I'm partial to all leather, but don't have the knowledge or the tools necessary to do one right.

I swapped the screws and washers. Still need a couple of finishing touches but it works for both my P227 and 229 SAS'. I'll wear it today while out and about to find out how comfortable it is.
