Decided to finally install the red dot…

I’ve been pretty lazy and even decided not to throw a red dot on my spectre comp for months until tonight…we did some low light shooting drills. I found the X-ray sights were impossible for me to use with my astigmatism.

I’ve learned to cope well in regular lighting conditions but I can’t seem to overcome 6 glowing dots no matter how hard I try. Any of you guys experience this? Overcome it without having to go the red dot route?

You might have even more problems with a red dot because of your astigmatism. Or maybe not. Have you tried one yet?

I have astigmatism and always struggled with handgun irons of any kind. Some are better, some are worse. I pretty much just point shooting a gun with irons and do good enough work at a close range with the ones that I had enough practice with. I gave up trying to do any kind of long(er) distance precision shooting with irons.

Red dots are a great solution for me. No problems at all and I'm pretty fast with a dot. Some say that a dot can be blurry for folks with astigmatism, but I have not noticed anything like that. For me even a blurry dot would be much better than irons.

I did try a Meprolight FT Bullseye sight on a SAS P365. I like the idea, but the rear sight is too close to my eyes and is quite blurry when I'm target focused. I noticed that if I move it a bit further away, then the picture becomes clearer. In some lighting condition the green bullseye in the blurry rear sight is too difficult to see at speed, so I'm back to point shooting without any confirmation of the sight alignment. I decided to sell my SAS and will try a Meprolight FT Bullseye Front sight on a regular slide later on. I think Bullseye front sight should work better for me, but again, I don't count on precision shooting with that sight either.

Also have astigmatism. Have a red dot on my AR and haven’t had any major issue. The only slight issue for me is when I turn the brightness up to 7 and higher. At that point the dot “stars”.
Irons are about useless now for my 'ol eyes. I've gone to Red Dot on all my pistols and shotguns. My distance vision is still OK so Red Dot allows me to stay target focused.

I have mild astigmatism so with a 2 or 3moa red dot (without corrective glasses) I see a group of small dots, very confusing. But a 6moa dot or 7.5moa triangle (DPPro) I get more of a 'blob' , much easier to place center mass quickly. YMMV

Reticle sometimes helps with astigmatism. Circle dots will trick your eye into having a true center dot. Similar principle to looking through a rear sight at your red dot on a rifle.

I have a red dot on my vp9 but I really wanted to avoid throwing a dot on the p365xl to keep it lower profile. The in-laws came over unannounced 2 days ago and have not left yet. I cleared the house when everyone was sleeping and just can’t get over the inability to discern the correct sight picture in very low lighting.
Gonna throw on that Romeo zero that’s been sitting in my drawer forever…

So you’re lurking around the house in the dark at night with a gun in hand with company over while everyone else is sleeping? Comforting 😆

But of course it was the in-laws, unannounced of all things, decisions, decisions….

you don’t know my in-laws…my brother hates his in-laws. They lie and steal, than hold the Bible up in their right hand when giving advice to us on how he can be a better person.
He hates mine more then his own.

Oh man, I get it. Extended family can be the worst and you’re stuck with them for better or for worse. That’s why I’m joking about the situation.
Lol oh I’m also sorta kinda joking…a little bit…if any. Sometimes you have to laugh at the misery that sleeps in the guest bedrooms, on the couches, and my ******** office!!!! :giggle::poop::lol1:

The XS big dot sights might work for you. You line the two up like this:

Font Astronomical object Gas Circle Electronic device

Rectangle Font Automotive tire Auto part Technology

If that doesn't work with your astigmatism then a red dot might just be the solution.

Good luck finding something that works!

That could be something….I actually sold my Romeo zero this afternoon and out a holosun 407k on it. I kinda like it but it’s just a hair too tall for holster. Have to do some trimming
With my astigmatism the night sights are fine though it's getting harder to get a clear front sight in general as I'm due for some bifocals.

Unfortunately without prescription lenses that help correct the astigmatism or really really squinting a dot optic is a total mess of a starburst pattern and its worse in the left eye. I'm generally without my glasses pretty often so that's a no go.
I tend to carry a standard P365 which means irons. But I got an XL out of curiosity and it's become what I train with and take to the range. I have a 507K on it and find the 32 moa circle reticle alone to be quite usable even without my glasses. There's a slight haze around it kind of a second circle but, I mostly just see the circle and put the center of it where I want to hit.

At this point in my life I'm still faster with irons. At some point though, my eyes may appreciate that I've been practicing with the dot.

Just one other thought.......I mounted a Crimson Trace laser on my P365 for pocket carry. My P365X has HS 407K.
Once you give up on irons and become totally committed to presenting the red dot on target without 'peeking' at the irons, then Red Dot, Laser, and Point-Shooting will all be identical target focused presentation that you can practice dry-firing at home. If the dot moves while you press the trigger, you have other issues to sort out. The dot don't lie. ;)
