CCW Transfer?

4242 Views 68 Replies 43 Participants Last post by  Krugermeier
Hey guys,

So I'm a soon-to-be new gun owner (Sig P365) however, I'm going to be moving to California next year, my question is, if I were to get my CCW where I currently live (GA) would i still have to take the training courses in California in order to get my permit out there or would I be able to transfer my Ga CCW ? Yes, I am aware Ca is absolutely ridiculous with their gun laws.

You will be lucky if they even let you keep your gun, let along give you a carry permit.
From a 34 year ex-CA resident...now in AZ.
They just about give you a gun when you move here.

GA is constitutional carry now. No need for a permit unless you are looking for reciprocity in other states. Don’t expect anything moving to California. I wasn’t even sure if the p365 was even on the roster honestly.

Well because before i purchase my 365, i was looking through the Ca gun laws and everything in order to make sure I was able to keep it, if i wouldnt be able to i would have settled for a glock 43, however, looking into all of it, as long as i was a Ga resident when i purchased the 365 and didnt just visit to purchase it i'd be able to keep it... which is why i was wondering if id be able to transfer a Ga CCW.

I do remember reading that Ga became constitutional carry so i know there isn't a need for Ga CCW but like i said, i was wondering if id be able to transfer it without needing to take the training courses in Ca that are required of residents to take in order to get their CCW...the P365 is not on their roster so i wouldnt be able to go into a gun store and purchase it for the fact that they are expliclity for Law enforcement...but because i purchased it as a resient out of state i am able to register it in Ca...i hope lol

I’m far from a CA expert (no way I’d ever live in such a f8cked up state!), but there are some good FAQ’s on the DoJ website.

Yeah, it’s tough enough keeping up with NY laws here. But I can’t imagine CA will have any way to “bypass” their tyranny. Good luck

Very very doubtful anything from Georgia would transfer to Cali.

I imagine so..
Lol California gun permit .. do you own a large business or handle cash or jewels , are you a body guard for celebrities , normal people don’t get permits in California , but you can if you live away from the major metro areas , any chance you’re moving to cattle country

I do not know of any state that lets you transfer a carry permit from your old state to the new one. You have to go through the process when you move to a new state - same with driver's licenses as far as I know.

Lol I think he was just trying to be funny because California has ridiculous laws I don’t think he actually meant it hahah
Permits don't transfer from state to state. Once you move and establish residency in a new state, your permit isn't valid.

Now some places, will issue you a new permit if you show an old one. But that will vary from place to place. I suggest you contact where you may be moving too. Some permits are issued by the police/sheriff. Some by the court system, etc.

yes he will have to get the info from the sheriff/PD for whatever county he is moving too,in most all of the Counties here (CA) the CC permits are given by the sheriff of the county you live in. In my county it reqiures a 16 hour class/range course. it was really easy in this county, the sheriff here is a 2nd amendment & CCW supporter.

I've always wondered this about Cali... Let's say I HAD to move there. I'd befriend someone in a rural county and pay them say $100 a month to 'rent' a spare bedroom. Draw up a lease and everything. And get a carry permit from that rural county with a 2A friendly Sheriff, regardless of where most of my time was actually spent.

Luckily, I probably won't ever have to do that.

Some states have permit "reciprocity" with others. But California WILL NOT accept a GA
permit.

Edit: But it looks like GA will accept CA! Go figure

Look here- click on your state and it will show which states honor your permit. https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/resources/ccw_reciprocity_map/
