Build/Buy Question

Hey, guys, it has been a pretty long time since I have been on. Life, work and the crazy price of ammo has had me pretty much out of the gun game for the better part of two years.

I am kinda wanting to get back at it and maybe replace one of the many guns I sold during the past two years. Right now, on the P320 front I have one fairly stock setup for home, a modified X-carry …for carry, and a VTAC I built up from the slide the way I wanted it.

So I was considering either getting one of the P320 X-Carry Spectre’s or just getting a Custom Works FCU and building something up.

I was actually surprised to not see much from a review standpoint on the Spectre. Pretty nice looking gun, though I less in on the gold and more in on the nitrite finish for its slickness. I had a 2011 I sold that was nitrite coated and I really loved how easily it cleaned up.

So for those in the know, what would be your suggestion between buy vs build.

Thoughts?

Sounds like you are the type that will tinker anyways so probably build what you want from the start haha

I built mine because finding a M18 in 357 Sig without a manual safety is, IMPOSSIBLE.

Hey RatBikeRod,

I purchased an X5 at the beginning of Covid to shoot IDPA. After shooting it for a few months I started switching around the FCU to a lighter grip module… then I built an Xcarry from a slide I bought from the trading post…. then I decided to switch slides from 9mm to a .40 from the trading post….. then I bought a FCU with a manual safety and Wilson Combat grip module, to have my .40 as an EDC.

It was fun (and cheaper during Covid) to hunt down pieces and put things together. Now, it is probably easier (and about the same $$$ since Covid prices seem to have been reduced) to buy vs. build. So it comes down to convince vs spending time to find the parts/modules/slides/barrel(s) you prefer.

Either way enjoy and stay safe and let us know what you decide 👍🏼

I started with a stripped SIG FCU off of GB ($130, this is 100%, not 80%, sent to my FFL), a SIG OEM lower parts kit (currently $90), added a SIG non-LCI barrel, and a AXG frame. I did buy the Apex trigger because I like the curved trigger (classic styling), and the +10% reset spring, so I do have a couple of extra parts from the LPK. Doing it this way, a la carte, you can go nuts with the parts selection, and get exactly what you want. and you learn a lot.

I don't think it's cheaper, though. Sig OEM slides are pricey, that's the biggest chunk, after the AXG frame. The Sig optics-ready slides were about $300, thank goodness that included the striker, extractor assemblies. so I guess that makes it kinda reasonable, no barrel or RSA. My cheapest AXG grip frame was $300. The plastic grip modules are dirt cheap, in comparison.

I think building something up from an FCU is super fun, and you can customize the final firearm to your liking. So I'd personally go for that.
I bought a custom works FCU simply for swapping parts on and off of it. The trigger is pretty nice and I figured hell why not?

If you are anything like me, you will want to swap things around so hard to go wrong with the custom works FCU.
I also built mine from just the fcu because I couldn't find what I wanted. I wanted basically a rxp carry in coyote, but all they offered was it in black. This is my version of the m18 without the safety, better grip and back up sights native to the slide. I'll eventually build one with a norsso slide in .357 sig for my next project.
Search GunBroker.com for a FCU which may come with a parts kit or some parts missing and you can build from there, people on here sell parts also and you have many options. I found a Sig P320 lower with FCU and no slide for $199 so have fun building.
