Beretta Miscalculation

While compiling the Sig Sauer "kits" available on Gun Broker, I happened onto a Beretta 92A1 kit on auction.

Since I've had my 96 for about 20 years, I thought, why not try and pick up this kit, and have a complete top end in 9mm, plus have the removable front sight, for easier conversion to tritium sights. Having done a preliminary "check", I was under the impression, that conversions on Berettas could be just like Sig P226s, either a 9mm Barrel slipped into the .40 Slide, or the whole Slide assembly!

Well, needless to say, the Slide assembly arrived, but when trying to slip it onto the frame rails, it would not slide past the Hammer... or actually the Dust Cover! The A1 and later frames with the built in accessory rails, are made to accept a "deeper" chin, on the Slide, so later Slides have too deep a chin, that contacts the Dust Cover on earlier frames, without accessory rails...

So "lesson learned", so I either find an A1 or newer frame in .40 S&W to create a "Swap Top". or sell the A1 Slide and Guide Rod assembly, and pick up a M9 or 92FS Slide, as the Barrel, Locking Insert, and other parts can work as "Spares".

You can fix that with a Dremel and a file.

Any references? Such as width, and/or depth of chin modification...

Of course, I should be able to measure difference myself, and figure that out... THANKS KenBry!!!

Yes, the 92A1 is a little bit different from the other 92 series. I was trying to find a 92A1 frame to use on a Brigadier slide and was told they're not compatible.

Just a quick comparison, the M92A1's chin is about 0.10" wider, so about 0.050" off each side, and the height close to 0.050" taller from the bottom of the Slide's rails. While the chin appears thick enough, to me, it's a little more than a "File & Dremel" job, unless I move to the Northwest Tribal Areas of Pakistan...

I've owned several M9/92FS and I can't remember if you could swap the .40 barrel with the 9mm. If you can, it's news to me.

No, that's where it's like Sig P226s, you can put a 9mm Barrel into a .40 Slide, but not vice versa, due to the size of the breech face. A smaller case head will fit into a larger breech face, but a larger case head fill not fit into the smaller breech face, and cause a headspace issue.

Personally, for a defensive firearm, I would rather have the correct set up.
