Hi,

I have a chance to own a Sig P226 for cheap.
I don’t own it yet so I don’t have any pictures.
But here’s the info I have on it.

It’s a 1987 West German P226 “JH” two tone(nickel slide?), with “triple serial numbers” and proof marks. It also has the NON “mud rails” and regular iron sights.
I’d say it’s in about 90ish percent condition.
doesn't look like it’s been shot much.
just holster wear. Has 2 magazines and no box or anything that came in the box

I’ve done a day worth of research and can’t find much on this model.
is it hard to find? Valuable? Something you would shoot the **** out of or keep in the safe?, etc

I love to shoot...but I also love collecting.
thanks for any info!

this isn’t it. But it looks exactly like it.

Welcome from Illinois, btw, I doubt anyone here will tell you NOT to buy ANY Sig, unless they’re trying to get you to pass the deal to them!!!

As already mentioned, without the box, it's no longer a real "collectible", just clean it up, and see how well it shoots! A minimum of a new Recoil Spring may be a safe move, in the past couple of years, I've picked up some early '90s German models that were originally DAO, and without boxes or manuals. I've converted them to DA/SA, and have enjoyed shooting them... since I had sold the original early model Sigs, I had bought new in the '90s, complete with all their regalia, to new owners that could appreciate, and later pass them on to their children.

Well without getting too personal.
I gave it to a family member a loong time ago to pay off a debt.
And after all these years they’re gifting it back to me for free....In the exact same shape lol
I dont think they even put 2 mags through it after all this time.

if it was something unique I wouldn’t want to shoot for that reason and a couple others.

but if it was something pretty common I don’t know what I would want to do with it.
I want to keep it for sure.
But I don’t know if I would want to keep it in it’s original state and shoot every once in awhile ....or clean it up with some new parts and shoot it a lot.
New parts would also take away some of the original sentimental value

so idk. I was kinda hoping it would be a unique piece so the decision would already be made for me.... a safe piece lol

Not unique. Not even rare. There are no reasons for it to be a safe queen.

hahaha. That’s what everyone said about Saigas about 20 years ago too.

You never know until you ask the experts. I didn’t see much about this model other than the “mud rails” were incorporated into half of the 1987 models..so you had a 50/50 chance of getting “mud rails” that year. And from what I understand mud rails are not a good thing. I also read that factory west German nickel finishes we’re hard to find around that time because they were switching to “Klein” in the United States.
Good to look for advice, you are lucky to have already heard from (2) of the most knowledgable experts, 12131 and Willard. (y)

That would also be an original two tone gun configuration, right, given only the slide is plated?

From the research I’ve done yes. It’s a All original west German two tone. The slide finish was done in west Germany and not by “Klein” in the USA.
I read that 87 was a iffy year for that.

But what I couldn’t find is when the two tone sig p226 was first introduced and in what numbers they were produced in.

i read several posts about people wanting to know if they should get a classic west German sig p226 or a early model Glock.
more than one reply said get the Glock..UNLESS its a original two tone sig p226.
Which led me to believe they might be hard to find. But I GUESS they’re as common as dirt these days
Lol

I don't think they are that common. But there is a reason for that in that they were never overly popular in the first place. Rare does not make sought after. Two tone sigs just smack of being guns made from the leftover bins.
If cheap buy it as a shooter or bedside gun.
For me there is no decision needing to be made over a classic sig or Glock. It is the Sig every time. There is nothing for me that puts the Glock ahead. But, all is personal preference. It sounds like you are just looking for an investment, this is not the gun for that.

it’s free to me.
And I’m not selling it. Very sentimental
I think I have enough info.
I have an eye for these things like you wouldn’t believe!
guns and knives.
Russian optics is where i messed up.
I had a good amount of them 15 years ago and I eventually sold or traded them all off for American red dots that no one gives a **** about now.
and I eventually sold those for Nothing

What’s does “

Mean?

The only other alternative was over produced carbon steel slides. Which rust really easily.
Why would you go with that over nickel!?
That’s like choosing a pure carbon steel barrel over a
Properly gauged chromed lined barrel.
It seems like you’re choosing form over function
Also. Have you seen what the classic original glocks go for? Or Even what the retro original glocks are going for? It’s insane !!

So from what I’m understanding is original glocks hold a lot more value over classic Sigs?
Even though classic west german sigs are like
Swiss watch pieces compared to glocks ?
