Action Job Spring Contouring?

1042 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  BGOd42
Greetings,

I was going through some videos on youtube and came across this:

He mentions that the work done to his pistol included a "spring contouring". It can be found right around the 12:30 mark.

His explanation that he "contours" the spring so that it sits better (I'd think lower) on the strut. I haven't gotten to conceptualize how it works and why should it matter given that the strut has a round opening. I'd believe contouring would mean that he removed material at the base of the spring? Can someone please kindly explain how that should help? I'm having a hard time visualizing since the spring is round and the opening is round, how would any alteration make it better?

Any input would be much appreciated, thanks!

I believe he is talking about creating a "flat" surface. When you use "round" spring stock and making the top or bottom of the coil, many times they grind the spring wire for a "flat" base.

This is the "best" example I could find...

Basically it insures equal compression around the circumference of the coil.

Oh I see, understood! I always thought of "contouring" as to shape something at an acute angle instead of just basically saying to make the base flat.

Edit: I just opened it up, and saw that it already had a flat surface. Don't know what more could be recontoured from it as it looks relatively quite flat. I did run it through some very fine grit sand paper for a mirror polish. I don't know if it's actually lighter, it sort of feels lighter but my hands are still somewhat strained from reinstalling the hammer spring housing. lol
