229 Magazine question

676 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  STR1
Hello Sig Talk members. I recently bought my 1st Sig Sauer a P229 Dark Elite .40 off of GB. It only came with 2 magazines both say made in Italy. When I was searching the web I found a sight that has used like new factory magazines. One option are Law Enforcement turn in that are "parkerized ". The other are regular factory magazines. Both options are factory magazines from Germany and both cost the same amount. I'm looking to buy 4 magazines and I thought about buying two of each. I thought it would be best to come and asked members that have experience with 229 magazines before I buy any magazines.
My questions is there any advantages of one over the other?
Which would you buy and why?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

I assume you are talking about CDNN, and their used Magazines. The "Law Enforcement" Magazines will all have the Restricted Markings from the 1994 - 2004 Federal Ban...

Wood Line Font Monochrome Automotive exterior

The "German" made Magazines are from J. P. Sauer & Sohn, and will have either a dovetail back, or "zipper" back where the Magazine is spotwelded together.

The "Italian" made Magazines are from Mec-Gar, and may be either "Ban Era" with the Restricted Markings, or "Post-Ban" without them.

There are US Made Magazines by Checkmate, which outwardly look similar to the Mec-Gar made units, that may be the used versions not marked as "Italian".

You can actually add +2 "Magazine Extensions" to the Mec-Gar or Checkmate magazines, but the German magazines, will be impeded by the lower "dimples".

@Willard , Thank you for all the information. Yes I was talking about CDNN but I didn't know if it was frowned up to mention specific retailer websites. I hadn't even thought about adding the base plate for the plus 2 extention. A lot to consider in making my choice. I like of having the option for plus 2 base plate.

I would also recommend Mec-Gar magazines. They also make most of the magazines they SIG ships with SIG's name on them. Mec-Gar makes OEM mags for most of the better brands. When you see SIG branded magazines that say Made In Italy, they are made by Mec-Gar.

Greg Cote sells the 14 round extended mags for a great price. Lots of us buy from this guy. Very good business to deal with.

Willard, are you saying CDNN is selling these? If so, are these the “used” or the “like new” versions offered on the CDNN website?

I have a single MecGar 14 round mag and love the feel of it in my hand!! I wouldn’t rule that out for at least one of your options.

The $24.99 Like New LE Magazines are actually showing the Restricted Marked German J.P. Sauer & Sohn, SKU: SIGMAG1 , but could also include later Mec-Gar Restricted Marked LE Magazines.

CDNN also has what appears to be Pre-Ban Sauer & Sohn Magazines, identified as "GERMAN" Magazines for $24.99 each as well SKU: SIG229G.

STR1, that's primarily a Facebook Group policy, as it borders on "sales", and subject to interference by Facebook itself. The only real problem here, is if you are promoting your own business, they would rather you join as a vendor, up front.

I've purchased P226 and P229 used/LE magazines from CDNN and have not had a single problem. Some had cosmetic blemishes, but all worked 100%. I would recommend a thorough cleaning before use.

Just an update to this thread in case anyone is curious. I bought 2 of the used like new made in Italy magazines and 2 of the used like new German made magazines. The Italian made magazines look like they were very lightly used. The German made ones looked brand new. Both were 12 round .40/357 magazines. The Italian made ones were easy to load. The German made ones were easy to load up to 10 rounds and then were very stiff to load the last two rounds. This was on both German made magazines that I ordered. I don't know if the will break in over time and become easier to load or not. If I had to do it again, I would ordered all 4 of the Italian made magazines.
